Garments can hold strong memories for the original owners, whether it be an item of clothing worn on a special occasion, or an everyday T-shirt. I have forced the garments in my installation to “remember” the stitches running across them with the very threads used to hang them in space. However, the alteration I made to the garments through the permanent pleating process has distorted the garments. They are still recognizable as clothing, but they are obviously not in their original state. Like the distorted garments in my installation, our memories are not perfect recollections, even of an important event or occasion. We may feel that we remember the event perfectly, just like the garments in this work still look like garments, but over time, the way we remember things will change and become distorted.
